Default Origins of the Cain and Abel Narrative

Strictly from a historical and rational perspective. How old is the Cain and Abel narrative? Some scholars can trace the earliest stories of Genesis (the Creation Myth, the Garden of Eden, and The Great Flood, for example) to ancient Mesopotamian myths. But with the Cain and Abel narrative, it appears to stand alone. Do you think it is an original story or does it have roots elsewhere?
