This is my opinion and experience.
Though I am finnish, and as such use also local translations, I prefer using english ones, such as these:

tools:

E-sword program (with dozens of add-ons which may also include some of the following other books)

Strong's Exhaustive Concordance
Vine's Hebrew and Greek dictionary
A Greek-English Lexicon

Improtant but less relevant tools

History books
Ancient texts, such as Philo, Josephus, Rabbinic Judaism, Nag Hammadi, Dead Sea Scrolls, Church Fathers
New Catholic Encyclopedia
Jewish Encyclopedia
Encyclopedia Britannica

Special translations:

The Interlinear Bible: Hebrew-Greek-English (by Jay P. Green)
The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible (by Abegg, Flint and Ulrich)

Relevant Bible translations

New Jerusalem Bible
New International Version
New American Standard Bible
English Standard Version
New Revised Standard Version

Bit less relevant versions (my view)

King James version
American Standard Version
New World Translation
Vulgata

Strongs Exhaustive Concordance is very in demand here in the States.

Also, today being world AIDS day, I'd like to ask everyone to pray for those afflicted with this terrible disease.

I would highly suggest including the New American Bible. It the official American Catholic Bible. It was translated from the Original Tongues into the American Standard dialect. It is better than the New Jerusalem because the original Jerusalem Bible was an original translation of the ancient tongues into French. It was then translated into English. In addition, it was finished before the Dead Sea Scrolls were released from Catholic control.

Thank you for finding those. I had at one point found a program called Bible Explorer but it didn't work. The program used varous Bibles and set out a reading schedule for you.

I've found a free version of said program here:
http://www.bible-explorer.com/
To download various Bible versions for this programe go here:

A criticism of this software is that it is very heavily leaning towards Trinitarianism.
